“Mascaron: Unseen city”
“Illustrations of the Stone Annals” ©

In the collection “Arabesques” Gogol wrote: “Architecture is also a chronicle of the world: it speaks when both songs and traditions are silent and when nothing speaks of the lost people”.
The history and memory of previous generations, as if in ancient annals, is invisibly present in our cities. The peoples who created them left us a kind of message — amazing symbols and signs on the facades of their buildings. Often these signs go unseen! But if you just take a closer look around, look up, look from a different angle, a new world will open — a world of Atlantes and Caryatids, lions and strange animals, griffins and bats, mysterious ornaments and mosaic panels …
These images on the facades — “Illustrations of the Stone Chronicle” help to discover amazing stories of architecture, traditions and memories of houses and their owners.
Join our travels — “Architectural passages” to open your hidden city, plunge into the mysterious world of symbolism of decor, history and culture.

About the project.

Every day, walking or driving through the streets of our cities, we, without realizing it, immersed into the historical-cultural space, which was created by preceding generations for a centuries.  The daily bustle and everyday viewing «images», so it become now so familiar, largely deprive us of the feeling of uniqueness and values of his native city, as well as ownership of its history and culture. With each generation, we lose a unique historical memory is preserved by previous generations in stories and legends, and is often associated with the surrounding architecture. These stories and legends, not replace, but like breathing life into the historical dates and facts directories, enrich and make more vivid and memorable perception of historical and cultural heritage.

During the project www.mascaron.org implementation some conversation with the residents, who, oh, miracle! still preserv some hearsays  and history of their homes took a place: ittle people know about the underground passage from  Lepeshkin’s house  (Pyatnitskaya, 48) to it’s «house church» on the other side of the street. And what about a surprisingly lively female image — mask on Chistoprudny Boulevard 15 (Building 2)! It turned out (according to legend, preserved by the residents of this house), that spouse of the building’s architect Zeligson more than 100 years is looking at us.
www.mascaron.org project aims to collect and store photos with «stone faces» of our cities: mascarones and cartouches, talamons and caryatids, friezes and medallions on the facade of our cities, as well as the related stories and legends.

Small reviews on the history, legends, as well as some comments to individual objects (photo) will be added periodically. A review on a  history of Moscow lions on the facades of buildings will open the project’s “posts feed”.

The project is started with a full set of photos dedicated to Moscow central part (within the «Garden Ring») — «Moscow many faced: the hippocampus and the other».

Soon the website visitors will be provided with an opportunity to form new sets for other cities and/or to supplement existing sets of photos and its descriptions by new comments, stories and legends.
